Supporters of Former Grand Rapids Police Officer Facing Murder Trial Gather Outside Courthouse
Supporters of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr gathered Monday morning outside the 17th Circuit Court, where Schurr’s second-degree murder trial following the 2022 killing of Patrick Lyoya is beginning today.
A press conference was held in Grand Rapids with Michigan state Rep. Jim DeSana, who spoke about the case and about introducing a bill DeSana says would “make Michigan’s self-defense protections among the strongest in the nation” and create “a presumption of civil immunity after a favorable criminal outcome”.
Coalition To Rescue Michigan founder Adam de Angeli spoke and criticized the Michigan Supreme Court and Court of Appeals after their 2024 decisions that allowed the case to proceed to trial. He stated “Christopher Schurr is an innocent man” and “What’s happened to him is a crime”.
