Detroit Councilwoman Sues City Clerk After Disqualification from Primary Ballot

Detroit City Councilwoman Gabriela Santiago-Romero held a press conference this afternoon announcing a lawsuit against the Detroit City Clerk after she was disqualified from being placed on the 2025 primary election ballot by the clerk's office.

The disqualification was made over allegedly failing to pay a late fee for missing a quarterly campaign finance report deadline. Santiago-Romero says the fee was assessed erroneously, and that the report was filed on time. She is suing to be placed on the August 5th primary ballot, and stated she will run a write-in campaign if her name is not placed on the ballot.

Santiago-Romero was joined by staff member Charlie Widmaier at the press conference.
