New Yorkers Bid Farewell to MetroCard at “Farewell Service” in Washington Square Park

New Yorkers bid farewell to the MetroCard today at a “farewell service” held at Washington Square Park.

The event was held shortly before the end of the MetroCard’s multi-decade run helping facilitate riders’ use of the NYC subway system.

The magnetic stripe card is being phased out and replaced with the OMNY tap-and-go system. The last day to buy or refill a MetroCard is December 31st, 2025.
