Chaos in Mexican Capital as Anti-Sheinbaum Protesters Clash with Police

Chaotic scenes unfolded in Mexico City on Saturday, where protesters against President Claudia Sheinbaum and the ruling Morena party marched as part of nationwide demonstrations against the incumbent government.

Protesters clashed with police at Plaza de la Constitución, commonly referred to as the Zócalo, throughout the afternoon. A barrier wall that had been set up outside the National Palace, the official residence of the Mexican president, was breached, leading to face-to-face confrontations between police who had been positioned behind the wall and protesters at the Zócalo.

A variety of crowd-control munitions were deployed, including flash bangs and teargas. Some in the crowd broke up drain covers into chunks of rock that were then thrown at police, who in turn threw rocks back towards the protest crowd.

Police eventually pushed the crowd out of the Zócalo and onto neighboring streets, where many dispersed on Saturday afternoon.
