Day of the Dead Ofrenda Set Up Outside Broadview ICE Facility

A Day of the Dead [Día de los Muertos] ofrenda was set up over the weekend outside the Broadview ICE facility. Pictures here show the ofrenda on Sunday, November 2nd.

Ofrendas [Spanish for “offerings”] are altars honoring the deceased, and are a part of annual traditions for Day of the Dead, a holiday observed in Mexico and by many of Mexican heritage abroad, including in the United States.

The ofrenda outside the Broadview ICE facility included a message on Sunday reading “This ofrenda honors all the children-named, unnamed, counted, and uncounted- who died in U.S. immigration encounters, and reminds us that transparency is itself an act of justice.”

The ofrenda was set up in a designated protest area outside the Broadview ICE facility, which has been the site of several weeks of demonstrations against ICE and the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The area is under an executive order by Mayor Katrina Thompson limiting protest hours to between 9am and 6pm daily.
