Unrest in Minneapolis Following Federal Law Enforcement-Involved Shooting

Chaotic scenes unfolded Wednesday night in north Minneapolis, where a shooting involving federal law enforcement occurred.

Protesters gathered along N Lyndale Avenue near intersections with N 25th and N 23rd Avenue, facing off against both federal agents and local and state law enforcement in the area.

Fireworks were thrown near federal agents close to the site of the shooting. Volleys of teargas canisters were deployed by federal agents as they attempted to move protesters from the area. Teargas was also deployed by the Minneapolis Police Department as a mix of state and local police moved away from Lyndale along N 24th Avenue.

DHS posted a statement on X shortly after the shooting, stating that the subject of a targeted traffic stop fled, was tracked down, and then assaulted a federal law enforcement officer during an attempted apprehension. The statement also said that two other individuals attacked the law enforcement officer. The statement says the officer “fired a defensive shot to defend his life.” It further indicated that the officer and the subject of the initial traffic stop went to the hospital.

Following federal, state, and local law enforcement leaving the area, three vehicles that protesters believed to have been used by federal agents were ransacked, with a number of documents, challenge coins and other items removed from the vehicles. Another vehicle was used to yank a case out of the back of one of the alleged federal-use vehicles.
